Celebrating 3 years cancer free: Steve Marshall’s St Mark’s Story

Steve Marshall celebrated being 3 years cancer free by walking 10k steps every day in March raising funds for our charity and specialist hospital. Not only did Steve smash his daily 10k, he also exceeded his fundraising target, raising a fantastic £375. It is a privileged to share his St Mark’s Story this Bowel Cancer Awareness Month.

“My name is Steve Marshall and in January 2019 I was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer after a routine colonoscopy at St Marks Hospital, even though I had no symptoms.

While I was receiving chemotherapy, my son gave me a scan photo of my granddaughter, a photo that I placed on my chest during every session. My granddaughter Lucie means the absolute world to me and, I thought, that with my cancer diagnosis, I wouldn’t have got to meet her. Thanks to St Mark’s, 3 years on, she is a big part of my life and I also have a grandson on the way, due in August 2022.

I am proud to say I was one of the first people to have keyhole surgery with the Da Vinci Surgical Robot on 1st March 2019. After the operation, the recovery was very quick, and I only spent 2 days in hospital. The staff were absolutely amazing, and I really can’t thank Surgeon Danilo Miskovic and all the staff for saving my life.

My message to others who are going through a similar situation?

There is a life after being told you have cancer and, life is wonderful”
